The Athletics have quietly made one of the most aggressive long-term commitments in baseball over the past year.
Since last offseason, the Athletics have handed out four extensions worth a combined $281.5 million, locking in key pieces of their roster well into the future. Those deals went to Jacob Wilson, Tyler Soderstrom, Lawrence Butler, and Brent Rooker, signaling a clear shift toward stability and long-term planning.
Wilson’s seven-year, $70 million extension came most recently, joining earlier deals for Butler (seven years, $65.5 million), Soderstrom (seven years, $86 million), and Rooker (five years, $60 million). All four contracts were signed within an 11-month span.
For a franchise long known for short-term control and frequent turnover, this marks a notable change in approach. The Athletics are betting that this group can form the foundation of their next competitive window rather than cycling talent in and out.
Whether these moves pay off on the field remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the Athletics are finally investing heavily in keeping their core together.
