CLEMSON, S.C. — NC State did not sneak out of Littlejohn Coliseum on Tuesday night. The Wolfpack survived it, earned it and announced themselves in the ACC race with a gritty, season-defining victory.
In a building that has swallowed plenty of ranked visitors whole, NC State outlasted No. 18 Clemson 80-76 in overtime, handing the Tigers their first conference loss and delivering first-year coach Will Wade his signature win in Raleigh. The result jolted the ACC standings, steadied the Wolfpack’s NCAA tournament résumé and breathed new life into a season that already hinted at promise.
NC State improves to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in ACC play, a crucial bounce-back after a frustrating home loss to Georgia Tech over the weekend. Clemson, which entered the night scorching hot and undefeated in league play, slips to 16-4 and 6-1 on the season.
This one had the feel of March in January. Clemson controlled stretches with physical defense, deliberate offense and the energy of a crowd sensing another ranked scalp. NC State answered with poise. The Wolfpack absorbed runs, defended without fouling late and made enough plays when legs grew heavy and possessions tightened.
When regulation ended deadlocked, the overtime belonged to the visitors. NC State executed cleaner sets, won key rebounding battles and showed the late-game toughness that has defined Wade’s best teams. It was not flashy. It was functional, disciplined and ruthless — exactly the kind of win that travels in the ACC.
The significance stretched beyond one night. Clemson entered ranked, confident and balanced, with one of the league’s most efficient defensive profiles. NC State walked into that environment and left with proof it can win away from home against tournament-caliber opposition. Those wins are currency in March.
For Wade, the moment mattered. Preseason expectations around the program were lofty, but expectations don’t guard ball screens or survive overtime on the road. Results do. This was the first true checkpoint of his tenure — a high-leverage game against a ranked opponent — and the Wolfpack passed it.
NC State’s offense remained patient against Clemson’s pressure, avoiding the empty possessions that doom road teams. Defensively, the Pack stayed connected through switches and contested shots late, forcing the Tigers to earn every basket. The margin for error was thin, but NC State never blinked.
The win also reshaped the ACC picture. Clemson had been rolling, blending experience with efficiency, and looked every bit the part of a top-tier league contender. NC State did not outscore the Tigers with hype or hope — it outlasted them with execution.
There is still work to do. At 4-2 in conference play, the Wolfpack sits firmly in the mix, not above it. Consistency remains the challenge, especially after uneven stretches earlier this month.
For a program chasing relevance, résumé and rhythm all at once, this was more than a road win. It was a statement — and perhaps the night NC State’s season truly arrived.
