Crown Them! Buford Wins High School National Championship over Carrollton

ATLANTA — The arguments can start now, but the banners won’t argue back.

Buford completed a perfect season Tuesday night, defeating Carrollton 28-21 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to claim the GHSA Class 6A state championship — and, for all practical purposes, the sport’s unofficial national title. The Wolves finished 15-0, the Trojans 14-1, and Georgia high school football finished exactly where it so often does: at the center of the national conversation.

This one earned it.

Buford, coached by Bryant Appling, closed the season the same way it began — by taking down a powerhouse. The Wolves opened the fall by knocking off Milton, spent three months flattening nearly everyone else by double digits, and ended it by surviving Carrollton in an instant classic played before a packed house under the Benz roof.

The only teams to keep Buford within single digits all season?
Milton and Carrollton.

Buford still beat both.

A Championship Worth the Build-Up

This game had everything the hype promised. Talent everywhere. Physicality at every level. Adjustments, counterpunches and just enough chaos to remind everyone why these teams were ranked where they were.

Carrollton arrived with momentum and credibility, having already taken down Grayson, a former national No. 1, on its march to Atlanta. The Trojans had accomplished everything asked of them — except the last step.

Buford made sure of that.

The Wolves executed when it mattered, finishing drives, forcing timely stops and refusing to blink when Carrollton surged. The final score reflected what unfolded on the field: a heavyweight fight that came down to composure in the fourth quarter.

Appling Adds to a Growing Legacy

The title marked Buford’s 15th state championship, its first since 2021, and its first in the newly stacked GHSA Class 6A super conference. It was also the fourth state title under Appling, who continues to add hardware to one of the most demanding jobs in high school football.

This one carries extra weight.

Buford now gets to hang another banner in its brand-new stadium, a facility that went viral this season and turned heads nationwide. The Wolves didn’t just build something big — they justified it.

A Night With Extra Meaning

Tuesday night also featured a familiar name in the stands. Dylan Raiola, the Nebraska quarterback now in the transfer portal, watched as his younger brother Dayton Raiola helped bring another championship home to Buford. For a program built on continuity and connection, it felt fitting.

Both sidelines were loaded with college-bound talent. Recruiting interest followed every snap. For many of these players, this game will serve as the bridge between what they were and what comes next.

And it’s a memory that won’t fade.

The Bigger Picture

Rankings will reshuffle. Polls will debate. Arguments will stretch into January.

But if we’re being honest — and sports are better when we are — this matchup settled it. Two unbeaten teams. National rankings across multiple services. A championship stage. And a winner that ran the table.

Georgia high school football doesn’t need to shout. It just keeps delivering games like this.

Buford finished the job.
Carrollton pushed them to the edge.
And the Wolves walked out with the trophy.

Call it a state title if you want.

Buford looked like a national champion.
