Moe Odum and Arizona State Stun Texas in the Maui Nightcap

MAUI, Hawaii — In a wild finish Monday night, Moe Odum put on a show for the ages. The Arizona State guard poured in a career-high 36 points, drilled a go-ahead three in the final seconds, and rallied the Sun Devils to an 87–86 upset win over Texas at the Maui Invitational. Thanks to Odum, ASU improved to 5–1, while Texas fell to 4–2 in what was supposed to be a marquee early-season test.

Odum’s line was insane: he buried 6 of 12 from deep, went 16 of 18 at the free throw line, and shot just 1 of 9 inside the arc — because when you’ve got the green light, who cares how you get your points? He also scored seven straight in a late stretch, putting Arizona State in position to close. With about 10 seconds remaining, Odum buried that dagger triple, and Massamba Diop followed with a huge steal to seal it for the Forks.

Texas tried to fight back. Dailyn Swain led the Longhorns with 24 points, connecting on 10 of 14 shots, but just 3 of 6 from the charity stripe — and missed freebies down the stretch hurt. Matas Vokietaitis added 15 points and eight boards, while Tramon Mark chipped in 11. The Longhorns had taken control with a few late runs, but ASU refused to wilt.

Behind Odum, ASU’s bench made a difference. Anthony “Pig” Johnson came off the pine and dropped 17 points, proving that this isn’t just a one-man act. And Diop was a menace on the glass, using a second-chance opportunity to knot the game before Odum’s big moment.

For head coach Bobby Hurley (yes, that Hurley), this was validation — a reminder that his team can grind, rally, and make plays when it matters. On the other sideline, Sean Miller, in his first season with Texas, must be rethinking some of his late-game rotations and defensive coverages.

This victory also gives ASU a ticket to the winner’s bracket semifinal on Tuesday against Washington State, while Texas slides into the loser’s bracket, where they face Chaminade, the tournament’s host.

Arizona State’s early-season surge isn’t a fluke. The Sun Devils rank among the country’s best in fast-break scoring, and their bench has accounted for a large portion of their production so far. Odum’s play has been electric all year, but tonight he brought something extra: swagger, ice in his veins, and a willingness to take over.

And let’s be honest — Maui still crushes Vegas when it comes to atmosphere. The Civic Center was buzzing like a beehive on caffeine. Wake-up calls were traded for palms, trade winds, and the kind of basketball jolt that reminds you why November matters. The Player’s Era Festival can have its print ads and brand activations; Maui brings the soul.

At 36, Odum not only delivered a performance for the highlight reels, he may have also made a statement: if you bet against Arizona State in November — especially when the gym feels like home — you might pay for it.

They’re not just a fun story. Tonight, they earned some real respect, thanks to Odum, the Bronx native, who had prior stops at Pacific and Pepperdine.
