NFL Week 5 Recap: Chaos, Comebacks, and Contenders on the Brink

Week 5 of the 2025 NFL season delivered everything: upsets, comebacks, and statement wins. Some favorites stumbled, underdogs stunned, and the standings tightened on both sides of the league.

San Francisco 49ers 26, Los Angeles Rams 23 (OT, Thursday Night Football)

The 49ers pulled out a hard-fought overtime win against the Rams despite being shorthanded. Mac Jones threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns, guiding the offense with poise throughout the game. After a field goal put San Francisco ahead in overtime, the defense came up with a crucial fourth-down stop to seal the victory. The 49ers improved to 4-1; the Rams dropped to 3-2.

Minnesota Vikings 21, Cleveland Browns 17 (London)

The Vikings held off the Browns in a close game overseas. Carson Wentz threw for 236 yards and one touchdown, connecting with Jordan Addison for the deciding score in the fourth quarter. Minnesota improved to 3-2; Cleveland dropped to 1-4.

Indianapolis Colts 40, Las Vegas Raiders 6

Indianapolis controlled the game throughout. Daniel Jones completed 20 of 29 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns, while Jonathan Taylor rushed for three scores. The Colts’ defense forced two turnovers in a dominant effort. Indianapolis improved to 4-1; Las Vegas fell to 1-4.

Dallas Cowboys 37, New York Jets 22

Dallas cruised to victory behind Dak Prescott’s four touchdown passes, two to Jake Ferguson. The Cowboys’ defense sacked Justin Fields five times and forced one turnover. Fields finished with 283 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Dallas moved to 2-2-1; New York fell to 0-5.

Denver Broncos 21, Philadelphia Eagles 17

Denver handed Philadelphia its first loss of the season. Trailing 17-3 entering the fourth quarter, the Broncos scored 18 unanswered points to pull off the comeback. Denver improved to 3-2; Philadelphia fell to 4-1.

New Orleans Saints 26, New York Giants 14

The Saints picked up their first win of the season thanks to a defense that came up big in crucial moments. New Orleans forced five turnovers, including two in the fourth quarter, to put the game out of reach. The Giants moved the ball at times but couldn’t overcome their mistakes, as turnovers repeatedly halted promising drives. New Orleans improved to 1-4; New York dropped to 1-4.

Houston Texans 44, Baltimore Ravens 10

Houston overwhelmed Baltimore from start to finish. C.J. Stroud threw four touchdown passes, and the Texans’ defense created three takeaways to keep the Ravens off balance all afternoon. Baltimore, playing without Lamar Jackson, never found rhythm on offense and managed just one touchdown and 207 total yards. Houston improved to 2-3; Baltimore fell to 1-4.

Carolina Panthers 27, Miami Dolphins 24

Carolina came from 17 points down to shock Miami. Bryce Young hit Mitchell Evans for a 4-yard touchdown with under two minutes left, and Rico Dowdle rushed for 206 yards and a score. Carolina improved to 2-3; Miami fell to 1-4.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 38, Seattle Seahawks 35

Tampa Bay outlasted Seattle in a shootout. Baker Mayfield completed 29-of-33 passes for 379 yards and two touchdowns. Lavonte David’s late interception set up Chase McLaughlin’s 39-yard game-winning field goal. Tampa Bay improved to 4-1; Seattle fell to 3-2.

Tennessee Titans 22, Arizona Cardinals 21

Tennessee rallied from a 21-6 halftime deficit to beat Arizona. Cam Ward threw for 265 yards, and Joey Slye kicked a 29-yard field goal as time expired. Emari Demercado fumbled near the goal line earlier for Arizona, erasing a potential touchdown. Tennessee improved to 1-4; Arizona fell to 2-3.

Detroit Lions 37, Cincinnati Bengals 24

Detroit kept rolling behind a balanced offense. Jared Goff threw three touchdowns, and David Montgomery ran for one and threw one on a trick play. A late safety sealed the win. Detroit improved to 4-1; Cincinnati dropped to 2-3.

Washington Commanders 27, Los Angeles Chargers 10

Washington stormed back from a 10-0 first-quarter deficit to score 27 straight points and take control. Rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt led the way with 150 total yards and two touchdowns, sparking a balanced offensive attack. Jayden Daniels threw for 231 yards in his return from injury, keeping the offense steady throughout. The Commanders’ defense forced two turnovers, both leading to points. Washington improved to 3-2; Los Angeles dropped to 2-3.

New England Patriots 23, Buffalo Bills 20 (Sunday Night Football)

New England edged Buffalo in a tightly contested AFC East matchup under the Sunday night lights. Drake Maye threw for 273 yards and managed the game efficiently, avoiding turnovers while leading a balanced offensive effort. The Patriots’ defense forced three takeaways and limited the Bills to two touchdowns, capitalizing on Buffalo’s 11 penalties to stay in control. New England improved to 3-2; Buffalo fell to 4-1.

Jacksonville Jaguars 31, Kansas City Chiefs 28 (Monday Night Football)

Jacksonville outlasted Kansas City in a back-and-forth Monday night battle. Linebacker Devin Lloyd’s 99-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter swung momentum toward the Jaguars, setting up a tight finish. Trevor Lawrence closed it out with a 1-yard rushing touchdown in the final seconds to complete the comeback. Jacksonville improved to 4-1; Kansas City dropped to 2-3.

Week 5 showed that no team is safe and no lead is guaranteed. Upsets, turnovers, and second-half surges kept the standings in flux heading into Week 6.
