Ulbrich’s schemes free rookies Walker, Pearce, Bowman and Watts to dominate as Atlanta evens record at 1-1
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons’ defense didn’t just show up Sunday night. It took over.
Powered by a rookie class that played beyond its years, Atlanta smothered the Minnesota Vikings in a 22-6 win at U.S. Bank Stadium. Jalon Walker, James Pearce Jr., Billy Bowman Jr. and Xavier Watts delivered game-changing plays inside a scheme built by defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich to maximize their speed and aggressiveness.
Walker recorded his first career sack in the second quarter, looping inside on a stunt that caught Minnesota’s protection sliding the wrong way. Pearce Jr. shared a sack with Brandon Dorlus in the first quarter, and his constant edge pressure forced J.J. McCarthy to hurry throws all night. Ulbrich repeatedly lined up his rookies wide and shifted fronts late, creating favorable one-on-one matchups that collapsed the pocket. Atlanta finished with six sacks.
In the secondary, Bowman Jr. intercepted McCarthy just before halftime, baiting the throw by showing off coverage before jumping the route. He nearly had another pick in the third quarter. Watts sealed the game with an interception late in the fourth, reading McCarthy’s eyes from a two-high shell and closing fast on the ball. Ulbrich disguised coverages throughout, bluffing blitzes before dropping defenders into passing lanes — a strategy that produced two of the Falcons’ four takeaways.
The run defense was just as sharp. Ulbrich stacked the box on early downs, trusting his corners to hold up outside while linebackers shot gaps. Minnesota’s backs were hemmed in for short gains, leaving the Vikings in long down-and-distance situations where Atlanta’s disguises and pressures took control.
Discipline was another hallmark. The Falcons committed few penalties and missed tackles were rare. Ulbrich’s emphasis on communication kept the defense connected, with rookies and veterans alike adjusting on the fly to shifts and motion. Every yard Minnesota gained was contested, and the Vikings failed to score a touchdown.
Rookie Defender Stat Box
(Falcons vs. Vikings, Week 2)
- Jalon Walker, DE — 1 sack (first career), 1 tackle for loss.
- James Pearce Jr., DE — 0.5 sack, 3 quarterback pressures.
- Billy Bowman Jr., CB — 1 interception, 2 pass breakups.
- Xavier Watts, S — 1 interception, 2 tackles.
Rookie totals: 2 interceptions, 1.5 sacks, 3 passes defended.
The Falcons improved to 1-1 with the win, but the story was the defense. Ulbrich’s scheme — pressure up front, disguise behind it and young players flying to the ball — worked from start to finish.
For Atlanta, Sunday was more than a bounce back. It was a glimpse of a future defined by rookies who look ready now. In Minneapolis, they weren’t just part of the plan. They were the plan.
