Oakmont, Pa. – Sunday, the U.S. Open final round from Oakmont Country Club tees off in the Pennsylvania foothills with plenty of drama left to take place.
Oakmont reared its ugly head again on Saturday, leaving just four golfers under par, entering the final 18 holes of play.
Sam Burns will tee off as U.S. Open leader Sunday with a -4 total to his name. Meanwhile, Adam Scott (-3) and J.J. Spaun (-3) are right behind the Louisiana native, while Viktor Hovland (-1) looks to play spoiler on the leaders.
The field is wide open behind the core four, as Mexican golfer Carlos Ortiz sits all alone in fifth at even par, with Tyrell Hatton and Thriston Lawrence tied for sixth at +1.
In true Oakmont fashion, the gap to the leaders begins to widen after Hatton and Lawrence. There is a six-way tie for 11th at +4, while the field looks to get back into the mix.
Despite a chaotic struggle amongst the field, the leaders have separated themselves in a class of their own, at least for now.
The winner of this year’s U.S. Open is likely going to come from one of the final two pairings.
Sam Burns, Adam Scott, J.J. Spaun and Viktor Hovland are poised for a run at history. However, the leaders are a double bogey away from opening the door for a surprise charge from outside the Top 5.
Scottie Scheffler currently sits at +4, but the No. 1 golfer in the world is never officially out of it. Although the chance of an eight-stroke comeback is slim, the possibility still remains.
Meanwhile, Thriston Lawrence will look to get back to his Thursday winning ways, where he finished P2 to Spaun at -3, which would mark Lawrence’s first career major victory.
