Sovereignty Reigns Supreme in Belmont Stakes; Defeats Journalism Again

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Sovereignty surged past Journalism to win the 157th Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Saratoga Race Course, capturing two of three Triple Crown races. Trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Junior Alvarado, the Kentucky Derby champion finished the 1 1/4-mile race in 2:02.14, earning $1.2 million from the $2 million purse. The race aired live on FOX at 7:04 p.m. ET, with streaming on Fubo and the FOX Sports app.

Sovereignty, a Godolphin homebred at 2/1 odds, rested after the Derby, skipping the Preakness. The strategy paid off, as the colt outran Preakness winner Journalism, also at 2/1, by three lengths. Baeza placed third, mirroring the Derby’s top three. Mott secured his second Belmont victory, while Alvarado notched his first. Held at Saratoga due to Belmont Park renovations, the race drew huge viewership.

Sovereignty’s Derby-Belmont triumph, though not a Triple Crown sweep, electrified fans. Social media posts lauded the colt’s late charge, while some noted Journalism’s grueling Triple Crown campaign. Since Justify’s 2018 sweep, no horse has claimed all three legs, but Sovereignty’s performance signals a star in the making, with potential for future greatness.
