Havin’ A Rico Year: Abreu Holds Off Kyle Larson in Thriller at Red Cedar

MENOMONIE, Wis. — Rico Abreu edged out Kyle Larson in a heart-pounding finish to win the High Limit Racing Series feature at Red Cedar Speedway and pick up his fifth victory on the year.

The 35-lap Roto-Rooter Midweek Series A Feature saw Abreu, starting fourth, execute a daring slide job in turn three to snatch the lead from Larson on lap 17. Larson, who led the first 16 laps, fought back fiercely, but Abreu held firm, winning by a mere 0.133 seconds at the line.

Tanner Thorson charged to third, trading paint with Larson in a battle that had fans on their feet. Justin Peck, starting on pole, faltered early, paving the way for the intense duel up front. The race showcased the grit and skill of sprint car racing, as two of the sport’s biggest stars dueled under the Wisconsin sky, at the historic Red Cedar Speedway, running since 1973.

Larson tipped his hat to Abreu’s bold move. The victory marked Abreu’s third straight Midweek Series win, cementing his hot streak for 2025. Fans left buzzing, already eager for the series’ next showdown Thursday night at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek.

The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion will look to get back to victory lane at 141 Speedway before taking on Michigan International Speedway in the Cup Series on Sunday afternoon, where he is a three-time winner (2016, 2017, 2017).
